Quick Start Guide

How do I start practicing?
  1. From the homepage, choose your learning path (Word Practice, Sentence Practice, or Conversation Practice)
  2. Select a level or category that matches your skill level
  3. When prompted, allow microphone access in your browser
  4. Hold the microphone button while speaking, then release when done
  5. Wait for AI feedback and pronunciation scoring
  6. Continue practicing to improve your Icelandic!

Tip: Start with Level 1 if you're a beginner, or browse by topic to focus on specific areas.

Microphone & Recording Issues

Microphone permission denied or not working
Chrome/Edge:
  1. Click the lock icon or camera icon in the address bar
  2. Find "Microphone" and change it to "Allow"
  3. Refresh the page
Safari (macOS):
  1. Go to Safari menu → Settings (or Preferences)
  2. Click "Websites" tab
  3. Select "Microphone" in the left sidebar
  4. Find wordpractice.studera.is and set to "Allow"
  5. Refresh the page
Safari (iOS):
  1. Go to iPhone Settings → Safari → Advanced
  2. Tap "Website Data" or "Settings for Websites"
  3. Enable microphone access
  4. Alternatively: Settings → Privacy → Microphone → Enable Safari
Firefox:
  1. Click the shield icon in the address bar
  2. Click "Connection secure" → More Information
  3. Go to Permissions tab
  4. Find "Use the Microphone" and check "Allow"
  5. Refresh the page
Recording button not responding or cutting me off

How the recording works:

  • Hold the button down while you speak (like a walkie-talkie)
  • Release the button when you're finished speaking
  • The recording will automatically process and send for feedback

If the button is unresponsive:

  1. Make sure microphone permissions are granted (see above)
  2. Refresh the page
  3. Clear your browser cache (Ctrl+Shift+Delete or Cmd+Shift+Delete)
  4. Try a different browser (Chrome or Safari recommended)

Note: You have unlimited time while holding the button. Take your time to speak clearly!

Speech recognition not detecting my voice
Troubleshooting steps:
  1. Check that your microphone is working in other apps
  2. Speak closer to your microphone
  3. Reduce background noise
  4. Make sure the correct microphone is selected in your system settings
  5. Try using headphones with a built-in microphone
  6. Check browser console for errors (F12 → Console tab)

Windows users: Make sure microphone privacy settings are enabled. Go to Settings → Privacy → Microphone → Allow apps to access microphone.

Audio Playback Issues

No audio or audio not playing automatically

Browser autoplay policy: Most browsers require user interaction before allowing audio.

Solutions:
  1. Click the "Start" button or interact with the page before audio plays
  2. Check your device volume and unmute if necessary
  3. Try clicking the speaker icon to replay audio manually
  4. In Conversation Practice, make sure you click "Start Conversation" first
Safari-specific issues:
  1. Safari has strict autoplay policies
  2. Make sure to click "Start" button before practice begins
  3. Check Settings → Websites → Auto-Play and set to "Allow All Auto-Play"

By design: Conversation Practice requires you to click "Start Conversation" to initialize audio. This ensures audio works properly.

Audio sounds distorted or choppy
Possible causes and solutions:
  • Slow internet connection: Wait for audio to fully load before playing
  • Browser issues: Clear cache and refresh the page
  • Device performance: Close other tabs/apps to free up resources
  • Audio format compatibility: Try a different browser (Chrome recommended)

Browser Compatibility

Which browsers are supported?
Recommended browsers (best experience):
  • Google Chrome (version 90+) - Best overall performance
  • Safari (version 14+) - Optimized for macOS and iOS
  • Microsoft Edge (version 90+) - Full feature support
  • Firefox (version 88+) - Good compatibility

Best experience: Use Chrome on desktop or Safari on iOS/macOS for optimal speech recognition.

Not supported: Internet Explorer, Opera Mini, and browsers with JavaScript disabled.

iOS and Safari-specific issues

We've optimized the platform for iOS devices, but Safari has some unique behaviors:

Known iOS/Safari considerations:
  • Audio autoplay: You must click "Start" before audio can play (browser security requirement)
  • Speech recognition: Uses native iOS speech recognition for best accuracy
  • Microphone access: Must be granted in Settings → Safari → Microphone
  • Fullscreen mode: Not available on iOS Safari (browser limitation)
If features aren't working on iOS:
  1. Update to the latest iOS version
  2. Update Safari to the latest version
  3. Clear Safari cache: Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data
  4. Restart your device

Learning Features & Progress

How does the scoring system work?
Pronunciation scoring:
  • Excellent (90-100%): Near-perfect pronunciation
  • Good (70-89%): Clear pronunciation with minor errors
  • Fair (50-69%): Understandable but needs improvement
  • Needs Practice (0-49%): Significant pronunciation issues
Conversation Practice scoring:
  • Earn 0-50 points per response based on grammar, vocabulary, and appropriateness
  • AI tutor provides feedback in both Icelandic and your native language
  • Total score accumulates throughout the conversation

Don't worry about perfect scores! Making mistakes is part of learning. Focus on improvement over time.

What is spaced repetition?

Spaced repetition is a scientifically proven learning method that schedules reviews at optimal intervals to maximize retention.

How it works in Studera.is:
  • The system tracks which words and sentences you've practiced
  • Items you struggle with appear more frequently
  • Items you've mastered appear less often
  • Review intervals automatically adjust based on your performance

Best practice: Practice regularly (daily if possible) for best results with spaced repetition!

How do I change the interface language?
  1. Look for the language selector in the top-right corner (flag icon)
  2. Click on it to see available languages
  3. Select your preferred language
  4. The interface will update immediately

Available languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Ukrainian, Greek, Danish, Lithuanian, Latvian, Arabic, Chinese, Tagalog

Note: This changes the interface language only. You're always learning Icelandic!

Is my progress saved?

Yes! Your progress is automatically saved using browser sessions.

What's saved:
  • Words and sentences you've practiced
  • Your pronunciation scores
  • Spaced repetition schedule
  • Practice statistics
  • Language preference

Important: Clearing browser data or using incognito/private mode will reset your progress.

Technical Issues & Troubleshooting

Page is loading slowly or freezing
Quick fixes:
  1. Refresh the page (Ctrl+R or Cmd+R)
  2. Clear browser cache:
    • Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+Delete (Cmd+Shift+Delete on Mac)
    • Safari: Cmd+Option+E
  3. Close other tabs to free up memory
  4. Check internet connection - try loading other websites
  5. Disable browser extensions temporarily (ad blockers, etc.)
  6. Try a different browser

Internet connection: The platform requires a stable internet connection for speech recognition and AI feedback.

Error messages or features not working
Common error fixes:
  • "Database connection failed": Temporary server issue. Wait a few minutes and refresh.
  • "Speech recognition failed": Check microphone permissions and try again.
  • "Network error": Check your internet connection.
  • "Audio playback failed": Make sure audio is enabled and not muted.
General troubleshooting:
  1. Refresh the page
  2. Clear browser cache and cookies
  3. Try a different browser
  4. Restart your device
  5. If the issue persists, contact support
Mobile device issues
For best mobile experience:
  • iOS: Use Safari (native speech recognition works best)
  • Android: Use Chrome (most reliable)
  • Hold your device closer to your mouth when speaking
  • Use headphones with a microphone for better audio quality
  • Make sure you're on a WiFi connection for best performance

Battery usage: Speech recognition uses more battery. Consider plugging in during longer practice sessions.

Conversation Practice

How does Conversation Practice work?

Conversation Practice lets you have realistic conversations with Rebekka, your AI tutor, in various scenarios.

How it works:
  1. Choose a scenario (e.g., Ordering at a Bakery, Coffee Shop)
  2. Click "Start Conversation" to begin
  3. Rebekka will greet you and start the conversation
  4. Hold the microphone button to record your response in Icelandic
  5. Release when done speaking
  6. Rebekka will respond and give you feedback
  7. Continue the conversation naturally

Pro tip: Don't worry about perfect grammar! Focus on communicating your ideas. Rebekka will correct you and help you improve.

Can I replay Rebekka's audio?

Yes! Click the play button (▶️) next to any of Rebekka's messages to hear it again.

This is great for practicing listening comprehension and pronunciation!

Can I see feedback in my language?

Yes! Rebekka provides feedback in both:

  • Icelandic - to help you practice reading
  • Your native language - for clear understanding

Click the translate button (🌐) on any feedback card to switch between languages.

Is my data private and secure?

Yes. Your voice recordings are processed for speech recognition and then discarded. We don't store audio files. Progress data is saved locally in your browser. See our Privacy Policy for details.

How long does it take to learn Icelandic?

It varies by person, but with regular practice:

  • Basic conversational skills: 3-6 months
  • Intermediate level: 6-12 months
  • Advanced fluency: 1-2+ years

Can I use this on multiple devices?
